Your logo is a visual cornerstone of a company’s brand. Your company’s identity is visually expressed through its logo and is one of the main things that makes your business memorable. Think of Google, McDonald's, and Nike. Each one of these companies has a distinctive logo that a large percentage of people would be able to describe without seeing. Most people don’t realize how important a good logo is and how valuable it can be to their business. So what makes up a good logo? I'll walk you through part of my logo creation process and show you some of my other logos I've created.
First I meet with the business owner and learn as much as I can about the business and what they do. Then I create pages and pages of rough sketches to see what stands out and different ways to create letters and shapes. The best logos are usually clean and simple. I love to incorporate hidden elements into my logos. I want the viewer to discover the logo's meaning which will help them remember it. Take a look at the 4 sketches I decided to convert to digital form.
Converting the sketches to digital form really brings the logo to life. It allows me to see which ones stand out, what catches my eye, what feels best, etc. I usually send these few digital files to my client to see what stands out to them. Nobody is better at knowing what best describes the company than the business owner himself. Number 4 stood out to me as well as my client.
There are several elements that I planned into this logo. First, I used the negative space in the middle of the logo to make an S for Sportscapes. Second, I used the green for the turf installation side of the business and the blue for the track systems side of the business. Third, the logo outline is a hexagon to resemble a bolt for the construction aspect of the business. The logo is balanced, has a nice heavy weight, and is intriguing to look at. Choosing the font to compliment the logo is also extremely important. I chose a sans serif font to match the clean look and a heavy weight to match the logo.
